âWhat the hell do you mean, I canât see her right now?â Diane yelled. âSheâs my daughter and sheâs in pain! Let me in there!â
Two orderlies held her, one on each arm, as a nurse stood warily in front of her, looking ready to defend herself if Diane broke free.
âIâm sorry, Mrs. Davisââ
âMs. Davis!â
âI can only tell you what Iâve been instructed to tell you. And that is, once again, that, at least for right now, you cannot see Alex.â
âBut why? Sheâs my little girl.â
The nurse raised her hands, palms out. âPlease, maâam, donât make this any harder than it is. Go take a seat in the waiting room. Frank here will get you a coffee andââ
âI donât want a goddamn coffee!â
âPlease, Ms. Davis.â
âMaâam? Mrs. Davis?â Someone behind her was trying to get her attention.
Now whoâs this? Diane turned as much as she could while still being gripped by the two orderlies.
Cops? What the hellâs going on here?
âCould we have a word with you, Mrs. Davis?â
The nurse stepped in. âItâs Ms. Davis,â she said.
âThanks,â the first officer said. âWhat do you say, Ms. Davis? Can we grab a coffee and talk?â
âWhatâs with the goddamn coffee? I donât want a coffee!â She struggled between the orderlies. âDo I look like I need a goddamn coffee?â
The officer looked at the nurse. âIs there someplace where we canâ¦?â
âExam room five is open,â she said.
âThanks.â He looked at the orderlies. âWe can take it from here.â
One orderly raised his eyebrows. When they released Diane she seemed to sag. The second officer took her gently, but firmly, by the elbow and the three of them walked the short distance to the exam room.
âHave a seat,â the first officer said, indicating the plastic chair farthest from the door.
âIâd rather stand,â Diane said.
âPlease,â the officer said. âMs. Davis. Take. A. Seat.â
She sat.
âIâm Constable McDonald and this is Constable Sydock.â
Normally, Diane would answer with either her name or a âpleased to meet you,â but they obviously knew who she was and she wasnât pleased about anything at the moment. Instead, she nodded.
Constable Sydock took the other plastic seat and Constable McDonald leaned against the exam table, crinkling the paper pulled over it.
âWhatâs this about, Constable?â Diane said. âWhy wonât they let me see Alex?â
âThatâs what weâd like to talk to you about,â McDonald said. âTell me about Alex. Howâd she get hurt?â
Diane told them about Alex being in the high chair, about arguing with Talia about breakfast, and then, out of nowhere, the screaming.
âAnd where were you when she started to cry?â
âI was standing in front of her. Like I said, Iâd just given her a hug. She was asking for another one.â
âAnd your other daughter?â McDonald looked at Sydock, who had a small notebook out and was scribbling in it.
âTalia,â Sydock said.
âYour daughter Talia,â McDonald continued, âwhere was she?â
âStanding beside the kitchen table.â
âHow far away from Alex?â
âWhy?â
âHow far away, maâam?â
âUhâ¦I donât know,â she said, looking down, trying to remember. âThree or four feet?â
âAnd you were facing Alex the entire time?â
âYes.
